The truth behind the uniform.
For years I wore a uniform. I stood in the aftermath of violence, death and trauma. I held the lives of others in my hands while my own was quietly falling apart. Blue Lights, Dark Mind is not a book about policing—it’s a book about being human when the world expects you to be unbreakable.
I wrote this book to tell the truth behind the uniform—the part no one talks about. This extract is from the beginning of my journey, when I still believed I was unbreakable.
The first thing that hits you isn’t the blood or the violence — it’s the silence. The silence of the reality that you are standing in a crime scene, a place where only a few hours before, a violent attack had left a victim dead, and now, crime scene investigators, donned in white suits and masks, stand trying to figure out what had happened.
The television was still playing in the background, the plate of half-eaten food on the table, the pots in the sink waiting to be washed, a life that not so long ago was normal, but had been interrupted and changed in a few moments, bringing to an end that normality and starting a chain of events that would change so many lives —including my own.
As I stood there, taking in what was around me, looking for evidence, clues, and signs, I felt the weight of the responsibility on my shoulders. I was the Crime Scene Manager—I was coordinating this crime scene and the scene of crimes officers in it; I was liaising with the Senior Investigating Officer and had the media outside watching me.

I didn’t write this to impress anyone. I wrote it because too many people feel alone. Too many suffer quietly because they think nobody else would understand. Too many believe asking for help is weakness.
This book is for them.

I enjoyed writing my memoirs so much, I thought I’d try my hand at writing fiction, so here it is, Blood and Salt.
Crime runs deep. Truth runs deeper.
Dundee is a city with a memory—some wounds never healed; some secrets were never buried. Blood & Salt is the first novel in my upcoming Scottish crime series. Dark, atmospheric and character-driven, it explores corruption, power and the things people are willing to do to protect what they fear losing.
The Story
Ex-detective Callum Strachan didn’t retire—he was pushed out. Forced to walk away from a career he gave everything to, he now lives a quiet existence on the edge of the city, carrying more scars than he admits.
When a young woman goes missing and no one seems to care, Strachan is reluctantly pulled back into a world he no longer trusts—a world where justice can be bought and loyalty is a currency with a high price.
His path crosses with Mhairi Ross, an investigative journalist with a reputation for going too far. What begins as a missing person enquiry becomes a descent into organised crime, political influence and a trail of violence that leads closer to home than either expected.
Why I Write Crime Fiction
I spent years in real investigations—murder scenes, interrogation rooms and evidence rooms where decisions had consequences. I’ve seen the damage that power, fear and silence can do. Blood & Salt brings that reality to the page—not with sensationalism, but with honesty and authenticity.
This isn’t procedural fluff. This is crime fiction that respects the truth.
Series
Blood & Salt is Book 1 in the Callum Strachan Series and will be ready to buy soon. Book 2 is already in development.

Truth lives in writing.
Crime runs deep. Truth runs deeper.
For years, I carried my story in silence. Writing changed that. It gave me a voice when I didn’t have one - and a way to reach people who felt alone in their own battles.
The Duty Inspector is where I write and speak across social media honestly about life after trauma, about rebuilding when things fall apart, about policing in general and even opinions on live and historical crimes.
Across my socials, podcasts and writing you will find that I don’t write or speak theory. I write and speak truth. The real kind.
What I Write and Speak About
Some stories are harsh. Some are hopeful. All are real.

I am currently writing The StrongMind Method Journal—a guided journal designed to help people slow down, reflect and rebuild from the inside out. It’s not therapy. It’s not a self-help gimmick. It’s a practical and honest reflection tool for real life recovery and mindset clarity—shaped by lived experience.
